Artist Shares Pixel Rendition of Iconic Fallout 4 Location

A talented artist created a pixel art rendition of Fallout 4‘s Red Rocket truck stop, adding to the ever-growing pool of fan art inspired by Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic RPG. The image promptly made the rounds on social media, with its attention to detail and overall execution impressing many a Fallout 4 fan.

As one of the first locations that Fallout 4 players encounter—at least on a first playthrough—the Red Rocket truck stop on the road between Sanctuary to the northwest and Concord to the southeast has long been regarded as one of the game’s most iconic sites. As such, it has inspired many creative undertakings, with Fallout 4 fans producing everything from Red Rocket LEGO builds to oil paintings.

Continuing this trend, Reddit user Im_Shocker has recently authored a pixel art depiction of the iconic Fallout 4 location. Their digital painting depicts the derelict gas station at night, viewed from the side facing the garage housing a suit of power armor. While the 1:1 aspect ratio combined with the artist’s perspective of choice cuts off parts of the structure, this was ostensibly done deliberately, with the goal of creating a balanced, near-symmetrical composition.

Im_Shocker’s Pixel Art Take on Fallout 4’s Red Rocket Truck Stop

The image itself is instantly recognizable as the Fallout 4 settlement location that inspired it, as it incorporates all the most prominent features of the Commonwealth truck stop, including the Red Rocket sign mounted on a garage with a flat roof extending outward. In the background, the titular red rocket appears in the retro-futuristic style—sometimes referred to as “raygun Gothic,” a term coined by William Gibson—that defines Fallout 4’s aesthetic. Details such as the garage-side Nuka-Cola machine and the walk-up window flanked by concrete ledges and rusted frames are visible as well.

The illustration also does a good job at incorporating the surroundings and atmosphere of the in-game location, complete with overgrown weeds, fallen leaves, patches of dead grass, oil drums, and a car wreck. Even the finer architectural details appear to be spot on, such as the canopy’s subtle downward slope seen just ahead of the point where it meets the front facade of the gas station building. Overall, Im_Shocker’s image captures the very essence of the Red Rocket truck stop, while simultaneously reflecting the artist’s own unique voice.

Commenting on this creation, its author explained that pixel art landscapes are their typical area of focus, and that painting Fallout 4‘s iconic Red Rocket truck stop is simply something that they felt inspired to do. The image itself was done on a 200 by 200 pixel digital canvas, using the Procreate iOS app on an iPad paired with an unspecified stylus.
