Monday, July 7 is either going to be a huge day for fans of Final Fantasy 9, or a bitter disappointment. Final Fantasy 9 was first released in 2000 for the original PlayStation. In many ways a return to the franchise’s roots after the heavy science-fiction influences in FF7 and FF8, Final Fantasy 9 released to widespread critical acclaim and is generally considered one of the best games in Square Enix’s long-running franchise.
Final Fantasy 9 was trapped on the original PlayStation for a decade before being made available to download on PS3. It was then ported to Android, iOS, and PC in 2016 before the HD remaster made its way to PS4 in 2017 and Switch and Xbox in 2019. These efforts have made Final Fantasy 9 playable on most modern gaming platforms, which is fantastic for those that want to revisit the classic. However, there are some fans hungry for a full-blown remake of the classic game.

Final Fantasy 9 Remake Rumors Intensify
Square Enix launches a new website in honor of Final Fantasy 9’s 25th anniversary amid rumors that the 2000 PS1 classic is getting a modern remake.
A Final Fantasy 9 remake has been rumored for years. The project was part of the infamous Nvidia leak, with many other titles in said leak proving to be real. Reliable leakers and insiders have also thrown their weight behind the Final Fantasy 9 remake rumors, making it seem like a matter of when, not if, the project will be announced. As it so happens, this coming Monday, July 7 marks the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 9‘s release on the original PlayStation. Needless to say, the game’s anniversary seems like the most opportune time to announce said remake, if it does exist. On the flip side, if Monday comes and goes with no mention of the FF9 remake, it may dash hopes that the project is real. It could really go either way at this point, and so fans should brace themselves for either possibility come July 7.
Final Fantasy 9 25th Anniversary Date
Square Enix has been releasing new art of Final Fantasy 9‘s characters on the website it made for the game’s 25th anniversary. Now, it’s entirely possible that this new art and various other small acknowledgments will be the extent of Square Enix’s plans to celebrate Final Fantasy 9‘s 25th anniversary, but that would be an odd move, all things considered. It may also lead to fans feeling misled if the Final Fantasy 9 remake isn’t announced on July 7.
If the Final Fantasy 9 remake is real and is announced soon, it will be interesting to see what direction it takes. It’s possible it could be something on the scale of the Final Fantasy 7 remake with a completely revamped battle system, but it could also simply be a redo of FF9 with graphics to match modern standards. Whatever the case may be, here’s hoping the rumors are true and fans get their long-awaited answers on the Final Fantasy 9 remake sooner rather than later.
