Sony has been working on its upcoming console for several years, yet it appears that the PlayStation 6 is still not on track for its release anytime soon. While Sony is collaborating with AMD to devise the PS6, it seems that it may still be some years before PlayStation fans can finally get their hands on it.
The PlayStation 5 was released in November 2020, at the same time as the Xbox Series X/S. Since then, the PS5 has sold over 65 million units, and recent reports indicate that it outsold the PS4 by 7% in its first 52 months in the market.

Sony Has Bad News for First-Party Titles on PS Plus
PlayStation Plus shares some hard news for subscribers seeking first-party games despite a glowing report on Premium customer growth.
Now, lead PlayStation console architect Mark Cerny has been interviewed by Tom’s Guide and updated fans on the development of the PS6. According to Cerny, Sony is collaborating with AMD to devise its upcoming console, as the company is trying to come up with better machine learning algorithms and CNNs (Convolutional Neural Networks) for improving game graphics. However, despite the fact that AMD is “moving extremely quickly” on its technology, Cerny acknowledged that the console’s release may take a while, as Sony is trying to “prepare for the next generation of consoles,” so the timeframe of the project was described as “multi-year.”
PS6 Will Not Be Released Anytime Soon
This news may be somewhat disappointing to gamers who expected the PS6 to release in 2027. Considering that normal console release cycles generally last seven to eight years, multiple individuals believed that the PS6 could be out soon, but it’s possible that it may end up being pushed further down the line.
What’s known is that Sony is working hard on the next-gen console, and there are rumors of a handheld being in the works, too. According to recent rumors, Sony’s next-gen handheld will feature built-in support for AI upscaling and have 16GB of GDDR5X RAM, but less memory bandwidth than the base PS5. Obviously, it’s always best to take these rumors with a grain of salt, as they are unconfirmed.
Sony has also promised a new upgrade for the PS5 Pro in 2026, which will update its PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) features, which are also a result of Sony’s partnership with AMD. According to one of Cerny’s previous interviews, Sony expects to produce results similar to AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling tech, which could be a huge perk for gamers who invested in the PS5 Pro. Time will tell whether this increased focus on the PS5 Pro means that gamers won’t be seeing the PS6 anytime soon, though.
