Most players are oblivious of this mechanic until they discover it accidentally, since the game doesn’t explain what the Memory Shards are for.

How To Access Thief’s Memories in Persona 5 The Phantom X
To access Thief’s Memories in Persona 5: The Phantom X players need to complete the first Palace and defeat Cupid/Kuichi, the Subway Slammer. Once they have witnessed Kuichi’s change of heart, they will be able to access the Thief’s Memories from the navigation menu.
- Open the navigation menu (bottom right).
- Scroll to the Second Tab.
- Select Memories (the Vinil Record Icon).
Once inside the menu, there will be a display of all the Thief’s Memories accessible, which are basically small episodes that resume the story from Persona 5 and introduce characters like Joker, Panther, and Skull. Plus, they will be able to access certain rewards for every episode of the Thief’s Memories watched. These episodes cannot be skipped and need to be unlocked using Memory Shards, a certain currency that players can only obtain by exploring Palaces.
Once unlocked, players can watch Thief’s Memories as much as they want. There’s no need to invest more Memory Shards. Just remember to claim the rewards after watching them for the first time.
How To Get More Memory Shards
Memory Shards are a special currency that can only be obtained by investigating certain spots in the Palaces, which are different from Chests opened with Lockpicks, or Puzzle Chests. Instead, they are part of the scenery of the Palace. Players will notice these require them to ‘Investigate‘ when they approach, and their characteristic Golden Shine can be distinguished from afar.
In Kuichi’s palace, these take the form of Ball Dispenser machines, and in Miyazawa’s Palace, they are Golden Koi Statuettes. Once players access these Memory Shards, they can use them in the Thief’s Memories menu to unlock new clips, and in consequence: More rewards.

So, completing 100% of each Palace is definitely worth a shot, since besides the completion rewards at each stage (10 to 100%), they will be able to access the Thief’s Memories rewards each time they acquire a Memory Shard. Players should think of these as an extra incentive to explore the Metaverse and all the Palaces in full.
Similarly to the Mementos Ticket Fare machine score, the rewards in Thief’s Memories can only be claimed once, but that doesn’t mean that players will be totally locked from obtaining more rewards in the future, as the game will have more and more content, and new Palaces to explore, which means new Memory Shards to earn, and more Thief’s Memories to watch.
