Grand Theft Auto 6’s Rumored Companion App Would Be a Double-Edged Sword

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been fertile soil for rumors to grow, and one of the newest to pop up could be one of its boldest yet. According to a recent job posting from Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto 6 may be getting its own companion app. This wouldn’t be the first time that video games have featured their own tie-in apps, especially not GTA.

GTA 5 had the iFruit app, and although it’s no longer functioning, it was a unique addition to the GTA experience. Rockstar has been seeking a mobile app developer, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean that the project is for GTA 6, it definitely shouldn’t be taken off the table. Considering that excitement for GTA 6 is building every day, a companion app could prove to be a lot of fun, but it may also be too risky.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Potentially Getting a Companion App May Be a Blessing or a Curse for Immersion

GTA 6’s Social Media Focus Has Been Made Clear

There have only been two trailers for GTA 6 released, and both have made it abundantly obvious that social media will play a significant role in the game. Many are eager to dive into Vice City, and based on preview footage, GTA 6 is continuing its franchise tradition of mirroring the real world. The GTA series has harbored its own special brand of satirical humor, so it wouldn’t be surprising if social media continued to be the butt of the joke.

In this regard, a companion app could be incredibly fun. GTA 6 is promising a robust world filled with a blend of hedonistic pastimes and more leisurely activities, like fishing and taking in the nature of Mount Kalaga. If social media is a major piece of the GTA 6 puzzle, a companion app may take immersion to even greater heights.

An app could open the door to a variety of activities, like calling a ride-share, or a social media hub inspired by Instagram or TikTok where players can share in-game photos and videos they have captured within the game. Much of GTA 6 still remains a mystery, but a tie-in app could offer up a wonderful cornucopia of possibilities. While there are plenty of potential pros to the rumored app, there are also plenty of cons to consider, too. Companion apps are difficult to pull off, and if Rockstar doesn’t stick the landing with such a feature, then it could prove to be more of an annoyance than a joy.

Rockstar has confirmed the main locations in GTA 6: Vice City, Leonida Keys, the Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga.

Companion Apps Can Struggle to Grab Enough Players

On paper, companion apps sound compelling, but it can be challenging to draw in the players needed to truly make maintaining the apps worth it. Ultimately, playing the game the app is based around is just more fun, making the implementation of one seem like extra baggage instead of something truly rewarding. Furthermore, a companion app for GTA 6 could simply be overkill. An app runs the risk of feeling more like a burden than a compelling way to experience the game. Of course, there’s no way to know if this GTA 6 rumor is true, but it’s not impossible.

If social media is a major piece of the GTA 6 puzzle, a companion app may take immersion to even greater heights.

Until Rockstar confirms a companion app, it remains to be seen what awaits gamers eager for GTA 6. In the past few months, rumors have suggested an in-game Drake-run radio station, a realistic weapon wheel, and over 700 stores for players to enter. It’s important to remember that all claims and rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, but if GTA 6 does get its own app, Rockstar will hopefully be able to nail it.
