On Tuesday, July 1st, Mojang released a surprise announcement of their third Minecraft game drop of 2025 centered around all things copper. Available for players to test now in Minecraft: Bedrock Edition’s beta and preview, the third 2025 Minecraft game drop is expected to officially debut later this fall. When it does, players can finally craft copper tools, weapons, and armor while also being able to build an old fan-favorite of the Minecraft Live 2021 Mob Vote: the Copper Golem. With the return of the Copper Golem and Game Director Agnes Larsson explaining that, “When we look at the visions for future game drops, we always revisit old ideas…”, it seems more past Mob Vote contestants could be added to the game.

Minecraft’s Mob Vote and Its Contestants Explained
Starting at the live-streamed event MINECON Earth 2017, the Mob Vote was a semi-annual event typically held during Minecraft Live presentations aside from the initial Mob Vote and the 2018 Mob Vote held exclusively for Minecraft: China Edition. Viewers primarily voted through Twitter, now known as X, in at least two rounds of a small roster of potential new mobs to be added to Minecraft. Since 2017, the Mob Vote was held every year except for 2019 until September 2024, when Mojang announced the contest’s official cancellation in order to, “…bring you something new.” Despite Minecraft’s Mob Vote retirement, Mojang still continued to add new mobs to Minecraft such as The Creaking.
Nevertheless, the Mob Vote allowed thousands of Minecraft players to take part in selecting which new mobs would inhabit Minecraft’s diverse blocking landscapes. The Minecraft Mob Vote winners include:
- 2017’s Phantom
- 2018’s Panda
- 2020’s Glow Squid
- 2021’s Allay
- 2022’s Sniffer
- 2023’s Armadillo
Despite these mobs winning the votes, many fans expressed disappointment that the other mob contestants wouldn’t be added to the game, with some claiming that Mob Votes were rigged due to how difficult some losing mobs would be to add to the game due to complex mechanics. However, a few Mob Vote contestants did find new life in Minecraft spin-offs, such as the Wildfire appearing in Minecraft Dungeons.
The Losers of Minecraft’s Mob Votes
While only six mobs were implemented into Minecraft from the Mob Vote, there were many more who were behind after not receiving enough votes. These Minecraft Mob Vote losers include:
- 2017’s Barnacle
- 2017’s Great Hunger
- 2017’s Wildfire
- 2018’s Chinese Alligator
- 2018’s Golden Monkey
- 2018’s White-Lipped Deer
- 2018’s Baiji Dolphin
- 2020’s Moobloom
- 2020’s Iceologer
- 2021’s Glare
- 2021’s Copper Golem
- 2022’s Rascal
- 2022’s Tuff Golem
- 2023’s Crab
- 2023’s Penguin
Most of these mobs were never officially implemented into Minecraft, but several of them have been recreated in several mods. Similar to the Wildfire mob, the hostile Iceologer was later added to Minecraft Dungeons‘ Creeping Winter DLC.
Returning Mob Vote Contestants May Get Slight Makeovers
With the Copper Golem officially debuting in Minecraft soon, there’s a lot of potential for Mojang to rework other past Mob Vote losers and integrate them into the base game in future updates. In the original 2021 video showcasing the Copper Golem, it was described as being able to roam around and press copper buttons. It additionally would have been able to turn into a statue once fully oxidized. The new Copper Golem will instead be able to take items from copper chests and organize those items in other chests. Copper Golems can additionally be created by placing a pumpkin on top of a copper block, which will also result in the creation of a copper chest. Oxidation will no longer affect the Copper Golem’s mobility.
Based on these changes to the Copper Golem’s functionality, the behaviors of other past Mob Votes losers can also be altered to better operate in Minecraft. For example, the Crab was originally described as spawning in mangrove swamps and being able to drop its large claw that, when picked up, would allow players to place blocks farther away. This claw mechanic could remain if the Crab was implemented, but Mojang could make the Crab mob larger and have it be a mount, allowing players to use it as a natural boat and to climb blocks vertically, similar to how it’s shown climbing a mangrove tree. Similarly, the Moobloom could be updated to allow players to milk honey from it as it is said to be friendly towards bees.
The Possible Return of the Glare or the Rascal
At the end of the fall 2025 Minecraft game drop video, a noise can be heard scaring Larsson deep in the copper mines of Falun, Sweden. While the originator of this noise is unknown, it could be hinting at the return of the Glare or the Rascal mobs. Both mobs were described as spawning underground in dark areas, but the Glare would alert players when an area was too dark for monsters to spawn, while the Rascal would reward players with prizes such as an enchanted pickaxe if found three times. If the Glare does return, it could be further updated to lead players toward monster spawners or rare ores if tamed. Similarly, the Rascal could be updated to function like an underground Wandering Trader.
