Summary
- A Chrono Trigger remake may be in the works at Square Enix.
- Developer Yuji Horii allegedly mentioned the game during a Comic-Con panel.
- Fans should keep in mind that it’s possible this is all a misunderstanding.
It seems as though a Chrono Trigger remake may be in the works at Square Enix. Chrono Trigger is one of the most critically-acclaimed RPGs of all time, and is often considered one of the best games ever made, period. Despite Chrono Trigger being so popular, the game has largely been left alone by Square Enix. It’s received enhanced ports to various platforms, but it remains unavailable on modern video game consoles.
Chrono Trigger was ported to PC in 2018, but it’s been dormant ever since. In the meantime, Square Enix has been reviving some of its classic JRPGs through remasters and remakes, making dramatic upgrades to the original Dragon Quest games and the old-school Final Fantasy titles. Many fans have been hoping for Chrono Trigger to get similar treatment, and now there is hope that such a project may actually exist.

Chrono Trigger Passes Impressive Sales Milestone
Classic Japanese RPG Chrono Trigger surpasses a major sales milestone 30 years after its original release on the Super Nintendo.
Those in attendance at a Comic-Con panel in Napels featuring Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest developer Yuji Horii have claimed that Horii accidentally let slip the existence of a Chrono Trigger remake. The claim is that Horii accidentally mentioned a Chrono Trigger remake, had someone whisper in his ear, and then, according to Reddit user LawfulnessSure125 (citing a claim on another forum), “covered his mouth as if he’d just said something he shouldn’t have.” Reddit user TheFishyOne, who was in attendance, confirmed this account, saying that they were among those who cheered at the mention of a Chrono Trigger remake. TheFishyOne added that the translator at the event asked Horii for confirmation, to which they were told, “You heard nothing.” We have been unable to independently verify these claims.
Chrono Trigger Remake May Be Happening
This is far from 100% confirmation that a Chrono Trigger remake is happening, but it wouldn’t be surprising at all if such a project is eventually announced. After all, Square Enix has been remastering and remaking its classic games as of late, and with the original Chrono Trigger unavailable on the latest game consoles, it seems like an obvious candidate for a remaster or remake.
The only question is what scope a Chrono Trigger remaster or remake would tackle. While something on the scale of the Final Fantasy 7 remake project is possible, a more likely scenario is that a Chrono Trigger remake would take its cues from the Dragon Quest HD-2D games. For the uninitiated, Square Enix has been revamping the OG Dragon Quest games with its eye-popping HD-2D art style. Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake released to strong reviews, and fans can look forward to Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake later this year.
