Meta Lays off Employees in Acquired Game Studios

Summary

  • Meta laid off employees in VR studios, affecting popular games Supernatural and Asgard’s Wrath.
  • Layoffs at Meta will lead to slower Supernatural workout releases.
  • Meta previously laid off 3,600 employees in 2025.

Meta has reportedly laid off employees in some of the game studios it has acquired. The studios are responsible for a pair of popular virtual reality games, and the move is already having an impact on at least one of the Meta Quest titles.

Unfortunately, layoffs in the game industry are nothing new at this point, and continue to plague the industry year after year. In 2025 alone, employees have been laid off at Microsoft, Bandai Namco, Ubisoft, BioWare, and Eidos Montreal, among others. Now, Meta is laying off employees for the second time in 2025.

Meta reveals that following a successful partnership, the company will be bringing the Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headsets to airline passengers.

Meta has now laid off employees in its acquired VR studios, namely Within Unlimited, Inc., and Sanzaru Games. The two studios are responsible for the Meta Quest games Supernatural and Asgard’s Wrath, respectively. A Meta spokesperson confirmed with The Verge that the layoffs had occurred, and were reportedly because “some teams within Oculus Studios are undergoing shifts in structure and roles.” Some employees within the company’s hardware operation teams have reportedly also been laid off.

Unfortunately, these layoffs are already having an impact on at least one of these games. After news came to light of the layoffs, the developer of VR fitness game Supernatural shared an official post on the matter, confirming that they had lost some of their team members due to the efforts to “work more efficiently.” As a result, it’s already warned players that workouts will be releasing at a slower rate than previously, though it will be adding multiple intensity options to more of its workouts, so it may not have as huge an impact on players as one might initially think.

As noted, this isn’t the first time that Meta has laid off employees this year. In February, Meta cut a whopping 3,600 jobs, or roughly 5% of its overall staff. At the time, it was said that these were performance-based terminations. It seems Meta thought there was still room to downsize further, though, given these new layoffs. According to Bloomberg, the most recently laid off Meta employees have been invited to apply for alternate roles at the company, but it’s not clear how many will actually be brought back.

Meta has acquired a number of VR studios in recent years, including the development studios responsible for games like Beat Saber, Batman: Arkham Shadow, and Resident Evil 4 VR. The company was previously planning a release for a virtual reality version of GTA: San Andreas, but that project has since been indefinitely delayed, and the studio responsible for it has been bought by Rockstar Games.
