Released into Early Access at the beginning of 2025, Hyper Light Breaker is the long-awaited follow-up to Hyper Light Drifter. The multiplayer roguelite game has been busy ever since, with a steady supply of updates that are often driven by the passionate feedback from Heart Machine’s fans. Though several updates have made some welcome improvements, none are as sweeping and impactful as its upcoming update entitled ‘Buried Below,’ set to arrive on April 29. Buried Below will make major changes to the roguelite run structure, introduce a new tutorial for smoother onboarding, and bring a new playable character to enjoy and a Crown boss to contend with.
In a trailer exclusively provided to Game Rant, Heart Machine shows off the fearsome new Crown, Maw, who is undoubtedly the biggest challenge Hyper Light Breaker players will have faced so far. With new weapons, characters, and updated mechanics to play around with, Maw also serves as an ideal testing ground for all the fresh toys at players’ disposal.
Hyper Light Breaker’s Maw Is Its Biggest Boss Yet
Maw makes his grand entrance flying from the edge of the arena and slamming into the ground, immediately ready to end the runs of any Breakers hoping to knock out one more Crown. Maw is shown to have a mixture of melee and ranged attacks, leaving nowhere safe for Breakers to rest during the fight. Slam attacks with his giant claws, a devastating beam-like fire breath attack, and a hail of overhead projectiles are some of the obstacles players will need to overcome when tackling this gargantuan opponent. Game Rant spoke with Lead Producer Michael Clark about this new boss, who says:
“Maw is unlike our other Crowns – I think she herself is larger than the entire church arena that Dro’s fight takes place in. Our other Crowns tower over the player, but are still just characters moving through an arena – Maw doesn’t move around the arena – she towers over it and reaches in to attack the player.”
While all of Hyper Light Breaker‘s Crowns are sizeable foes, Maw absolutely dwarfs them. Clark pointed out that she’s even larger than the arena Dro occupies, and this presents some new challenges for players. Rather than chasing down an agile boss like Dro, players will be fighting an enemy that dominates and controls the entire arena at all times. A substantial changeup from Hyper Light Drifter‘s initial cast of Crowns, Maw is an example of how Heart Machine has no shortage of content to deliver as this Early Access phase presses onward.
