South of Midnight is the newest title from We Happy Few and Contrast developer Compulsion Games, which has been an Xbox Game Studios subsidiary since 2018. While its base version retails for $39.99, South of Midnight also has a $10 more expensive premium edition, which originally debuted with a three-day early access period.

South of Midnight is available to everyone as of April 8, following its international release at 9am PDT / 12pm EDT / 6pm CET. Like any other first-party Microsoft title, this stop-motion action adventure rooted in Southern Gothic horror is available via Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on day one. Compulsion’s third-ever game is also the studio’s first title to skip the Xbox One, as it was only released for the Xbox Series X/S and PC. However, owners of Microsoft’s last-gen console can still technically use it to play South of Midnight via Xbox Cloud Gaming—an exclusive perk of XGP Ultimate.

Alongside South of Midnight, Microsoft’s subscription service also added Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls on April 8. Originally released in March 2014, Reaper of Souls is the first Diablo 3 expansion that launched to near-universal acclaim, as reflected in its “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic, derived from an average score of 87 and a 94% reviewer recommendation rate. It’s also the third entry in the series to make its way to Xbox Game Pass, following Diablo 4 and Diablo in March 2024 and January 2025, respectively. Many Activision Blizzard titles are still missing from Xbox Game Pass as of April 2024, although Microsoft is gradually filling these gaps.

While South of Midnight‘s reviews aren’t as stellar as those of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, Compulsion’s latest title still created some fairly positive buzz. It currently holds a “Strong” OpenCritic rating, based on the Top Critic Average score of 78, as well as a 68% reviewer recommendation rate. South of Midnight also launched to “Very Positive” player reviews on Steam. Its Xbox Store user scores are still too few to derive a meaningful average rating.

Moving forward, Commandos: Origins and Descenders Next are coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on April 9, and will be followed by Blue Prince a day later. Grand Theft Auto 5 is then set to reach all non-Core XGP tiers on April 15.
