Fallout 76 has come a long way since its troubled release in 2018. Back then, everything from its lofty, unfulfilled promises to its buggy state started a new controversy, leaving many to think that Fallout 76 was dead on arrival. However, Bethesda has remained committed to the game, and it’s a totally different experience in 2025. Just recently, Fallout 76 released the “Ghoul Within” update, allowing players to play as a ghoul for the first time in the series’ history.

Fallout 76 introduced a new threat with the Scorched Plague, and future games diving deeper into the sickness could be fascinating.

Even with its significant recent updates, work is already well underway on the next big addition to the game. In the patch notes for the Fallout 76 public test server (PTS), it was revealed that the fishing feature is finally here to try. Players can head to Fisherman’s Rest, a new location on the Fallout 76 map, where they’ll start the “Casting Off” questline. According to Bethesda, any body of water has fish to catch, so players aren’t limited to specific areas where they can take part in this feature. There are three types of bait to obtain, each increasing the chances of players catching fish.

These fish can even be turned into food, with region-specific catches available across the game world. The rest of the patch notes for this update are largely balancing changes, with fishing being the star of the show here. There is no indication about when Fallout 76 will release the fishing update in full, as it likely depends on the success of the tests. Players who want to jump into the latest Fallout 76 PTS update can do so via their Steam libraries.

Beyond the upcoming fishing update, Fallout 76 has plenty for fans to look forward to this year. Bethesda recently released the next Fallout 76 roadmap, detailing the content players can expect between now and the end of June. The game continues to pull in a large number of players, and with no Fallout game in sight any time soon, it’s a great way for fans to get their fix of the series at the moment.
