‘It’s Been So Long That, You Know, Why Not?’ Arkane Founder Comments on Dishonored 3

Summary

  • Raphaël Colantonio is interested in working on Dishonored 3 but is focused on WolfEye Studios’ new game.
  • Documents for Dishonored 3 exist, but release seems unlikely with the key creators no longer at Arkane.
  • Arkane Studios is currently working on Marvel’s Blade, extending the wait for a Dishonored sequel.

Arkane Studios founder Raphaël Colantonio has commented on whether he’d be willing to work on a potential third game in the Dishonored series. Despite leaving Arkane in 2017 and later founding WolfEye Studios, Colantonio still has a soft spot for Dishonored.

The original Dishonored was released in 2012, before being followed up by the sequel in 2016. Both were unique action-stealth titles that offered players multiple solutions to every problem, tied together with a unique gothic aesthetic that remains distinctive to this day. Despite being arguably one of the best stealth video game franchises ever, it has been dormant ever since the 2017 spin-off, Dishonored: Death of the Outsider. Arkane’s 2021 title Deathloop was set in the same universe, but was not marketed as part of the same franchise.

How Dishonored 2 ‘Saved’ Arkane

Nearly 10 years after Dishonored 2’s release, an insider describes how the game saved Arkane Studios during a time of uncertainty.

Speaking on the Quad Damage podcast, Arkane founder Raphaël Colantonio said, “I’d love to, I mean, we’re talking about totally hypothetical at this point… I could see myself working on Dishonored 3 right now because it’s been so long that, you know, why not? I would revisit that.” Players hoping to see Dishonored 3 any time shouldn’t hold their breath, though. Colantonio’s current developer WolfEye Studios is working on a new game of its own, and there’s certainly no suggestion he’d ever actually return to Arkane Studios, making his comments extremely hypothetical.

Arkane Founder Would “Love To” Work on Dishonored 3

Colantonio did comment on whether he had ever had plans for Dishonored 3, stating, “I had a document about Dishonored 3, Harvey [Smith] has a document about Dishonored 3, I think Dinga [Bakaba] has one too. Dinga is the current boss of Arkane and Harvey was my co-creator director on Dishonored, Harvey Smith. So yeah, we have ideas. I don’t think it would make sense to talk about it… which of those three versions will ever see the day, I think we’re talking about science fiction at this point.”

With both Harvey Smith and Raphaël Colantonio not working at Arkane anymore, it’s unlikely that their versions of Dishonored 3 will ever be released. At the moment, Arkane Studios is working on Marvel’s Blade, which was first announced at the end of 2023. That’s not to say that Arkane won’t return to its gothic stealth-action franchise in the future, but the current nine-year wait for a mainline sequel is very likely to extend to a decade and beyond.
