Considering the number of games in The Legend of Zelda franchise, it would be reasonable for fans to speculate about what may or may not be true regarding certain characters and events. While there are already known facts regarding each entry, players still have their own opinions regarding a few mysteries. That is why there are so many popular Legend of Zelda fan theories, with some known to be some of the most outrageous, even to the most open-minded. However, whether the wildest speculations have the likelihood of being real is all up to the supporting evidence provided by the franchise.
Although Nintendo and Eiji Aonuma have published a chronological order of events and confirmed the existence of two parallel timelines, it still left several unanswered questions in The Legend of Zelda franchise. From titles such as A Link to the Past to the more modern iterations, many have created theories that could explain why certain things are the way they are in certain entries. Some are more believable due to several pieces of evidence surrounding their viability, but some raise eyebrows due to how hard they can be to believe. Still, the more bizarre theories are some of the more popular ones, and players would likely want an explanation as to their existence in the first place.
The Bizarre but Popular Theories of the Legend of Zelda Franchise
The Zonai Are Actually a Type of Alien
Starting with the most recent mainline entry of the franchise, Tears of the Kingdom has fans speculating about the origins of the tribe responsible for the kingdom of Hyrule. Even now, the Zonai remain a mystery, as all players know about them is that they are descendants of the Gods who fell from the heavens. As for why some speculate that they are extraterrestrials from outer space, here are a few reasons:
- They originated out of the sky, seemingly out of nowhere, as there is no detailed explanation as to how they descended.
- The technology that they can create seems far too advanced for any of the inhabitants of the world to be capable of, even before their arrival
- Some believe the Zonai’s powers came from their alien masters who infused stones with their powers and granted the items to their descendants
The Link in Majora’s Mask Died at the Very Beginning
This is one of the darker theories which states that one of the reincarnations of Link was already dead as soon as the opening act. At the beginning of Majora’s Mask, the main protagonist finds himself in the woods and is harassed by the Skull Kid, who then lures him into taking a fall from a great height. Although it shows Link surviving, some believe that he may already be dead and that his journey throughout the land of Termina is a purgatory meant to help the character accept his death. Areas of the world are believed to represent the 5 stages of grief, with Clock Town being denial, Deku Palace being anger, and so on. While there is some merit to what is known as the “grief theory”, it is still hard to believe due to Majora’s Mask Link’s role in the official timeline as the Hero’s Shade in Twilight Princess.
The Gerudo Became the Twili in Twilight Princess
While there are popular Gerudo characters in the Zelda franchise, it is possible that the tribe itself turned into the Twilight Princesses‘ Twili race after the events of Ocarina of Time. As soon as Ganon’s attempt to take over Hyrule was foiled, he and his tribe could have either been exterminated or banished, with some believing they were sent to the Twilight realm and evolved into the Twili during their imprisonment. With the race being noted as the descendants of sorcerers who tried to take control over the Triforce, it helps the theory hold merit as that is what the Gerudo once tried to do in prior events.
Whether it’s theories of Tears of the Kingdom or that of previous titles, there will always be something about the games that many will try to speculate on. Even if some are particularly bizarre, there may be a chance that they could end up being true or at least have some truth to them in The Legend of Zelda franchise, so long as there’s proper evidence that helps support it.
