At the end of Diablo 4, Neyrelle – the young scholar players meet early in Act 1 – absconds with the soulstone of Mephisto in hopes of finding a way to destroy the Lord of Hatred once and for all. However, during the release date trailer for Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, fans are shown that things aren’t going well on her journey so far; she is tormented by Mephisto with visions of her mother, and her own body being mutilated. The uncontrolled powers of the soulstone even unintentionally slay her guide.

The lore video appears to take place on the same boat as the Vessel of Hatred cinematic, but without the guide, meaning it likely takes place after the fact – showing her stubborn determination to keep going forward no matter what.
